Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Reveals Alastor and Rosie's Backstory Serves as a Huge Teaser for Season Three
Dedicated fans of the show at last received a long-awaited backstory in season 2's episode 4, titled “It's a Deal.” This installment is likely to prompt a lot of discussion and pose numerous questions about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears far more powerful than anyone previously realized. The new revelations include a look into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and condemnation to Hell.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The show's creator disclosed an inside detail about “It's a Deal” – it acts as a huge hint for the third season. She also provided further details into the methodology of creating the human versions of her demonic animated characters.
Spoiler alert for episode 4 of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In the episode, a look back discloses that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a mass murderer in his mortal days. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the realm beyond beforehand to obtain a strong position in Hell. The charismatic leader, who leads Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the most powerful Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his soul.
This prompts the question: How is this character powerful enough to raise Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that involves so much, leading into the third season,” the creator states. “Clearly that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The solution might be many things, but the answer is in season three. I am thrilled for fans to witness it.”
It is uncertain how long viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s next season. The production companies have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner often remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons are undated. Nevertheless, she says withholding on those details is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s attention in the right places.
“The difficulty of any agreement with infernal beings, or narratives that have enigmas, is giving the audience just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The showrunner promises that season 3 will address the queries fans have been asking, such as why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for a seven-year period, which weakened his influence in the infernal realm.
“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these humans are doing, and all that — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she reveals.
In the meantime, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode offers a further look into how the core cast of Demonic Sinners looked like as humans, following after seeing another character's Victorian-era mortal appearance in the second episode. The creator says that significant consideration was put into these character designs.
“The human versions of these personas carry great significance,” she notes. “They range from appearing quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With the first character, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate internally between choosing a design that represents the character, as opposed to selecting an option that's very time-period accurate. We leaned toward making something that just seemed like it was him.”
She mentions the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one really had long hair of that style in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we believe the outline is so important, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we create the human versions of these characters […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and determine. I'm excited for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
