One Australian is included in the 115 persons hurt in a blaze that ripped through a packed nightclub during a NYE celebration in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, which resulted in 40 fatalities.

Ministerial Confirmation on National Injured Person

A senior Australian government minister, Chris Bowen, confirmed on Friday morning that an Australian national was hurt and was getting both hospital treatment and embassy aid.

“This is undoubtedly a horrific, horrific tragedy and I am confident every Australian extends their sympathies to the people of Switzerland, the people involved,” Bowen told ABC RN radio.

He continued, “I can confirm that one Australian has been injured and is getting medical attention and the family is receiving support, Australian consular support. Further details cannot be shared for privacy reasons. The name of the individual is not being released at this point.”

Department Response and Ongoing Inquiries

The nation's foreign affairs department confirmed on Friday morning it was providing consular assistance to the hurt national and their family.

A Dfat spokesperson said: “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) is providing consular assistance to the relatives of an Australian national that has been hurt and is undergoing treatment following the fire. Owing to our privacy obligations we are not in a position to give more details.”

The official continued, “The department is pursuing immediate inquiries with Swiss officials to ascertain if any further Australian nationals were involved. Our team is ready to give consular help.”

Details of the Blaze

Local police reported the blaze began around 1:30 a.m., local time, in a bar popular with tourists called Le Constellation, which is situated in the heart of the Valais resort.

Video of the incident depicts orange fire raging from inside the ground-floor bar and lounge. Cries and blaring music are audible, and multiple persons were witnessed lying outside the building.

Certain victims in the fire have yet to be identified yet due to the extent of their injuries.

Investigation into the Fire's Origin

Authorities confirmed arson was not responsible for the fire, which is believed to be the consequence of an unintentional act.
