2026 Declared the Year of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their popularity has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are bona fide titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming seems especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities enable a wide array of unique mechanics.

A number of the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
